AUTHOR: Michelino da Besozzo (documented)

PATRONAGE: Offered by the Apothecaries College to celebrate the triumphal entrance of Duke Filippo Maria Visconti in the Cathedral on the day of St. Giulitta. To please the Duke, the Apothecaries chose the Legend of St. Giulitta and her son Quirico; thus no coat-of-arms or emblem could be included in the window.

SUBJECT(S): 7b2) Solomon; 6c2) David; 6a2) Old man with a book; 6c1) Old man with a scroll; 7b1) Old man blessing; 6a1) Bald Prophet (Ezechiel ?)

CRITICAL NOTES: The attribution of the six trilobes to Michelino da Besozzo is based on the fact that beneath the heavily overpainted coating and, overall, on the glass faces hidden under the cames, the delicate grisaille and designs typical of Michelino are noticeable. So the stylistic affinities to Michelino's works such as The mystical Marriage of St. Catherine (Siena, Pinacoteca), The Adoration of the Magi (Vienna, Albertina), and the Cathedral payments to the artist testify to Michelino's authorship of these trilobes.

Exhibitions: Milano,1958 "Arte lombarda dai Visconti agli Sforza".

CONDITION: the trilobes have been heavily overpainted with cold paint by P.Bertini (?).

Restoration and Conservation: 1956-66 Ven. Fabbrica del Duomo-Curator: E. Brivio: cleaning system: on the internal face clear water thickened by cellulose; on the external face brush-dusting. New frames in "bronzo marina"(a particular type of bronze alloy); and new copper protective nets. No protective glazing.
