PROVENANCE: Milano, Cathedral, St. John the Evangelist window (sXX)

AUTHOR: Agostino de' Mottis (attribution)

SUBJECT(S): St. John the Evangelist, tortured, is plunged into a pot of boiling oil. On the base incomplete inscription (DO)micianus S. Jaon tor=quet

CRITICAL NOTES: The panel is widely repainted and difficult to read. It is a variant of another panel of the same subject still in situ (window sXX, panel 1a), but differs in style from the other panels. The faces show close analogies to those in the stained glass window Sts. Gervaso and Protaso (Pavia, Charterhouse) painted by Agostino de' Mottis who collaborated with his father Cristoforo in the Milan Cathedral.

CONDITION: Several XIX century replacements (the inscription, the open gallery)
