| TITLE : The good Thief |
LOCATION: Milano, Cathedral Museum
DIMENSIONS: 120 x 60 cms.
PROVENANCE: Milano, Cathedral New Testament window (sII)
CHRONOLOGY: about 1544
AUTHOR: Currado Mochis da Colonia and his assistants (Giovanni de Croxis and Alessandro di Anversa) (attribution)
SUBJECT(S): The good thief, upper left panel of the Crucifixion
CRITICAL NOTES: This panel belongs to the grandiose Crucifixion (now window sXVI, panels 10 a-b-c and 11 a-b-c), fulcrum of the Passion Cycle executed by Pietro da Velate to continue the Life of Jesus. Only three panels painted by Pietro da Velate have survived: The holy Women (10a), The Magdalen (10b), Christ on the Cross (11b). Meanwhile, the panels The good Thief (11a), The bad Thief (11c), and The Soldiers (10c) are replacements by P. Bertini. This panel and the following one (see Museo 17) were executed by Currado Mochis and his assistants to continue the unfinished window perhaps as a result of an early breakage or left incomplete as a result of Pietro's death (1525) (see Duomo 4) (C. Pirina).
CONDITION: In good condition although several heavy mending leads and some stopgaps.
